Product Description

Our Winfield Professional Oboe Reed with Brass Staple pairs Winfield's distinctive all-metal staple with a focused, vibrant brass-plated body, available in three strengths so you can pick the resistance that suits your playing. A professional-grade reed with the brighter, more present voice that orchestral and ensemble players often prefer.

The brass staple, properly engineered

Winfield's brass staple is precision-machined to tight tolerances rather than hand-shaped, so every staple is acoustically consistent. Two user-replaceable rubber rings replace the cork found on a traditional staple, leaving the metal free to vibrate without damping. The result is a more open, resonant projection, particularly useful in ensemble work where you need to be heard.

Brass vs gold: the character difference

If you've considered our Gold Staple reed, the brass version is its brighter cousin. Gold is a softer metal, giving a warmer, rounder tone; brass is denser and harder, giving a more focused, projecting sound. Neither is better, they're different voices for different musical situations, and a fair number of advanced players keep one of each in the case.

Important: oboe socket size

The hole at the top of your oboe needs to be at least 7mm in diameter to accept this reed. Most modern oboes are fine; some older or student instruments can have a smaller socket. Measure if you're not sure.
